Elk Grove, CA (June 1, 2026) – Two people died and two others were hurt in a two-vehicle collision on Elk Grove Florin Road early Monday, June 1, morning. The wreck happened around 4:00 a.m. and left a major stretch of road closed for several hours.
Police had spotted a suspicious silver sedan near Brown Road shortly before the accident, and when they tried to make contact, one person got out of the car and ran. The sedan kept moving westbound on Brown Road, and then struck a Tesla traveling southbound on Elk Grove Florin Rd.
Four people were in the Tesla at the time: two of them died, and the other two were taken to the hospital.
Two teens inside the silver sedan were detained at the scene. The third person who fled the car before the collision remains unidentified.
Elk Grove Florin Rd was closed between Calvine Road and Heritage Hill Dr while emergency units worked the scene.
No names were confirmed in the initial report on the wreck. The road was expected to remain shut for several hours following the crash.
Detectives are still working to piece together the full sequence of events leading up to the collision. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who lost their lives.
What Typically Happens After a Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash in California?
When a crash results in fatalities, the road where it happened is often closed for an extended period so investigators can document the scene thoroughly. Measurements, photographs, and physical evidence from both vehicles are collected before anything is moved. This process can take several hours, especially when multiple people were hurt or killed.
California law enforcement typically works to establish the sequence of events leading up to a fatal collision, including vehicle speeds, direction of travel, and any evasive actions taken. Traffic reconstruction specialists may be called in to assist when the details are complex or when multiple vehicles are involved.
When a fleeing suspect is connected to a fatal crash, the case may carry additional criminal weight under state law. Detaining those present at the scene is a standard first step while investigators work to track down anyone who left before police arrived.
