Houston, TX (July 2, 2026) – Two people were killed early on Wednesday morning after an overturned 18-wheeler crushed a passenger vehicle, sparking a fire on the Katy Freeway in west Houston.
According to the Houston Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 (Katy Freeway) near State Highway 6.
Houston Fire Department crews responded to the scene and confirmed that both the driver of the 18-wheeler and the driver of the passenger vehicle died in the collision.
Preliminary information indicates the semi-truck overturned and landed on top of the car, causing the vehicle to catch fire. Authorities have not released the cause of the truck’s overturn or the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
The identities of the two victims have not been released pending notification of their families.
The crash forced the closure of multiple eastbound lanes of the Katy Freeway for several hours as emergency crews extinguished the fire, removed the wreckage, and investigators documented the scene.
The cause of the fatal crash remains under investigation by the Houston Police Department. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
Why Overturned Semi-Truck Crashes Can Be Especially Deadly
Collisions involving overturned tractor-trailers often result in catastrophic damage because of the vehicles’ size and weight. When a commercial truck overturns onto another vehicle, occupants of the smaller vehicle face an increased risk of fatal injuries, particularly if a fire develops after the impact.
Investigators typically examine the truck’s speed, cargo, braking system, roadway conditions, and electronic data recorder, along with witness statements and physical evidence from the scene. These findings help determine what caused the truck to overturn and whether mechanical issues, driver actions, or other factors contributed to the crash.
