Merkel, TX (July 21, 2026) – Two people lost their lives in a Sunday evening collision involving a semi-truck and a pickup towing a trailer on the Interstate 20 frontage road near Exit 269 in northeast Merkel.
The fatal accident happened at approximately 7:41 p.m. Preliminary findings indicate the pickup attempted to merge in front of the semi but did not leave enough space. The trailer then made contact with the front of the semi, causing the pickup to skid off the roadway and overturn.
The pickup’s occupants, identified as 80-year-old Charles Murray and 67-year-old Deborah Murray, both of Coldspring, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi was not hurt. Investigators have not released any additional details about the fatal collision.
The cause of the crash is being examined as the investigation continues.
