Why Do Wrong-Way Crashes Have Fatal Consequences?
Wrong-way crashes are among the most severe types of traffic collisions because they frequently involve head-on impacts at highway speeds. The combined force generated during these crashes results in catastrophic vehicle damage and life-threatening injuries.
Investigators reviewing wrong-way incidents typically examine driver behavior, roadway evidence, toxicology results, vehicle data, and witness statements to determine how a vehicle entered the roadway in the wrong direction and whether impairment or other factors played a role.
Transportation agencies continue to implement enhanced signage, roadway markings, and detection systems designed to reduce the risk of wrong-way driving and improve safety for all motorists.
