Wake County, NC (June 22, 2026) – One person lost their life, and another was injured following a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 540 at the Neuse River Bridge in Wake County on Saturday morning, June 20.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the eastbound lanes of I-540 after receiving reports of a serious collision involving two vehicles.

Authorities said one of the vehicles went over the guardrail during the crash. Emergency crews responded to the scene and provided aid to those involved.

One person was pronounced dead as a result of the collision, while a second individual sustained injuries and was transported for medical treatment. Officials have not released the identities of those involved or the extent of the survivor’s injuries.

The eastbound lanes of I-540 were closed for several hours while investigators examined the scene and crews worked to clear the roadway. The lanes have since reopened.

No additional details regarding the cause of the crash have been released. The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victim and hope for the recovery of the injured person.

Why Bridge and Guardrail Crashes Can Be So Severe?

Crashes occurring on bridges or near guardrails can result in particularly serious outcomes due to limited recovery space and the potential for vehicles to leave the roadway. When a vehicle crosses or goes over a guardrail, occupants may face additional risks beyond the initial collision.

Investigators examining these incidents typically review vehicle speeds, roadway conditions, witness statements, physical evidence, and any available video footage. Authorities also analyze the sequence of impacts and the role roadway infrastructure may have played in the crash.

The findings from these investigations help establish what occurred and may contribute to future roadway safety improvements.
