Hillsborough County, FL (June 29, 2026) – Two men lost their lives, and another driver suffered minor injuries in a multi-vehicle crash on SR-39 just south of East County Line Road in Hillsborough County. The collision occurred at approximately 12:25 p.m. on Saturday, June 27.

As stated by the Florida Highway Patrol, a Subaru SUV was traveling southbound on SR-39 when the driver attempted to pass another southbound vehicle. Investigators said the Subaru entered the northbound lane and collided head-on with an oncoming Chrysler minivan. The impact caused the vehicles to rotate across the roadway before one, or both, struck a Ford F-250 that was traveling behind the Subaru and towing a horse trailer.

The Subaru driver, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chrysler minivan, also an adult man, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the two victims. The 64-year-old Webster man driving the Ford pickup suffered minor injuries and was not taken to a hospital. This is a developing story.

We extend our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

Why Passing Maneuvers Can Lead to Head-On Collisions

Passing another vehicle requires enough time, distance, and visibility to safely return to the proper lane before meeting oncoming traffic. When a vehicle enters the opposing lane without sufficient clearance, the risk of a head-on collision increases significantly.

In crashes involving multiple vehicles, investigators examine roadway markings, sight distance, vehicle speeds, and impact locations to reconstruct the sequence of events. Secondary impacts can occur when nearby vehicles are unable to avoid the initial collision, increasing both the severity of the crash and the number of people affected. These reviews help determine how the incident unfolded and what factors contributed to it.
