La Platte, NE (August 7, 2026) – Two people were seriously injured on Wednesday, August 5, in a collision on Highway 34 near Harlan Lewis Road. Responders took both patients to a hospital for treatment.
All lanes of Highway 34 were blocked while crews worked along the roadway. Investigators continue to review the available evidence to determine how the crash occurred.
We hope both injured people have a speedy recovery.
Why Can Serious Crashes Lead to Full Highway Closures?
A severe collision may leave damaged vehicles, debris, or injured patients across several lanes. Closing the roadway gives medical teams and towing crews enough room to work without passing traffic nearby.
Investigators may also need access to tire marks, vehicle positions, broken parts, and other evidence before cleanup begins. Moving traffic through too early can interfere with that work or create additional hazards.
Road width, vehicle placement, injury severity, and debris can influence how long a closure lasts. Even after lanes reopen, backups may continue while delayed traffic gradually returns to normal speed.
