Why Wrong-Way Crashes Often Result in Severe Injuries
Wrong-way collisions are among the most dangerous types of roadway crashes because vehicles approach each other from opposite directions, reducing the time available to react. These situations can occur on highways, ramps, and other controlled-access roadways where drivers are not expecting opposing traffic.
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable in these crashes because they lack the protective structure found in passenger vehicles. Even when riders wear helmets and other safety gear, the forces involved can lead to serious harm.
Investigators reviewing wrong-way collisions often analyze roadway signs, ramp design, vehicle movements, and visibility conditions. They may also examine whether confusion, impairment, distraction, or other factors contributed to a vehicle entering a roadway in the wrong direction. Understanding these elements can help explain how such collisions occur and why they frequently produce severe outcomes.
