Townsend, DE (June 24, 2026) – Two 17-year-olds died after a collision involving an electric bike along Dupont Parkway in Townsend early on Saturday morning. Delaware State Police said that the two teenagers were walking an electric bike in or near the left lane of southbound Dupont Parkway, just south of Denny Lynn Drive, when they were struck by a vehicle around 1:10 a.m.

Investigators identified the driver as Nizaiah Ellis, 23, of Newfield, New Jersey. Police said Ellis initially stopped after the wreck, but later left before being taken into custody during a traffic stop.

Ellis faces charges related to leaving and failing to report a collision resulting in death. The circumstances surrounding the fatal accident remain under investigation. Our condolences go out to the families and friends of the teenagers.

How Hit-and-Run Cases Are Investigated After Fatal Roadway Crashes

Hit-and-run cases often require investigators to gather information from vehicle evidence, witness accounts, and available video footage. Small details, such as vehicle parts left behind or descriptions from people nearby, can help identify a driver.

Investigators may also review roadway design, lighting, and traffic patterns to better understand how a pedestrian-related collision occurred. These reviews can take time because many details must be verified before a complete picture is available.

Fatal roadway incidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists often highlight the need for drivers to remain alert, especially in areas where people share space with vehicles. Safe driving habits and awareness can help reduce the risk of serious harm on public roads.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
