Colorado Springs, CO (June 24, 2026) – A woman riding an electric scooter was seriously hurt after being struck by a truck in a hit-and-run collision early on Tuesday morning.

According to Colorado Springs police, the collision happened around 2 a.m. at the intersection of E Platte Avenue and N Wahsatch Avenue. The officers said the woman was traveling southbound on Wahsatch Avenue when a white Chevrolet Avalanche traveling eastbound on Platte Avenue struck her.

A Colorado State Patrol trooper arrived while officers were heading to the site and began life-saving measures. The woman was later treated for serious injuries.

Police said the Chevrolet driver left the area after the collision. Officers later located the vehicle near E San Miguel Street and Murray Boulevard and contacted the driver, identified as Dathan Smith, who was detained and processed for DUI.

The investigation into the hit-and-run collision is ongoing as authorities review the circumstances. We are keeping the injured woman in our thoughts as she receives medical treatment.

Safety Considerations for Electric Scooter Riders and Drivers

Electric scooters share space with larger vehicles, creating safety challenges in busy areas. Riders may be harder to see, especially at night or in low-light conditions, making it important for everyone on the road to stay alert.

Protective equipment, proper visibility, and adherence to traffic rules can help reduce the risk of serious injury. Drivers should remain alert at intersections, in bike lanes, and in areas where scooters and pedestrians commonly travel.

Roadway reviews following scooter-related crashes often examine traffic signals, vehicle movements, visibility, and street design. These details can help explain how the collision occurred and identify factors that may affect future safety efforts.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
