Albany, NY (August 6, 2026) – Two City of Albany employees were seriously hurt following an explosion and flash fire at the Department of General Services headquarters on Tuesday, August 4.
The explosion was reported at approximately 3:15 p.m. at 1 Richard J. Conners Blvd. According to the police, the blast occurred at a gas pump in the facility’s fuel area. The resulting flash fire was brought under control within several minutes after emergency units arrived.
One of the injured workers was identified as Wayne Brennan, a battalion chief with more than 30 years of service in the Albany Fire Department. The second person, a Department of General Services employee whose name has not been released, also suffered severe burns. The city worker was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, while Brennan was flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center for treatment in its specialized burn unit. The cause of the explosion continues to be examined as the investigation remains active.
