Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes rear-end crashes like this one?
Rear-end collisions typically happen when a trailing driver fails to notice stopped or slowing traffic in time, often due to distraction, following too closely, or misjudging speed.
Does speed make a difference in how serious a rear-end crash is?
Yes. Higher speed increases both the force of impact and the distance needed to stop, so even a short delay in braking can turn a minor crash into a serious one.
How does distracted driving factor into crashes on open highways?
A driver who glances away from the road for even a few seconds can miss a vehicle stopped ahead, especially on rural highways where traffic appears without warning.
What to Do After a Rear-End Crash in Plains, Kansas
If you're involved in a rear-end crash on a rural highway, move to a safe area if possible and call 911 right away. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting checked by a medical provider, since pain from neck, back, or internal injuries can take hours or days to show up. Get the names and contact information of everyone involved, along with the responding agency's report number, and take photos of the vehicles and the scene if you're able. Keep a copy of any medical paperwork and follow up with your insurance company once you've had time to process what happened.
