Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid being involved in a highway crash like this one?
Keeping a safe following distance, staying alert for slowed or stopped traffic ahead, and avoiding distractions are some of the most effective ways to prevent rear-end and lane-change collisions on freeways.
What injuries commonly result from two-vehicle freeway crashes?
Whiplash, bruising, and soft-tissue injuries are common, but higher-speed impacts can cause broken bones, head injuries, or internal injuries depending on how the vehicles collide.
What usually causes crashes like this one?
Distracted driving, following too closely, sudden lane changes, and impaired or fatigued driving are frequent factors in nighttime freeway collisions, though the cause of this particular crash has not been confirmed.
Does speed make a difference in how serious a crash is?
Yes. Higher speeds mean more force at impact and less time for drivers to react, which tends to increase the severity of injuries and vehicle damage.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Van Nuys, CA
If you're involved in a crash on a freeway, try to move to the shoulder or a safe location if the vehicle is driveable, turn on hazard lights, and call 911. Even if injuries seem minor, it's wise to get checked by a medical professional, since some injuries like concussions or internal bruising aren't immediately obvious. Exchange information with the other driver, take photos of the scene and vehicle damage if it's safe to do so, and request a copy of the official collision report once it's available. Giving yourself time to rest and following up with a doctor if symptoms appear in the days after the crash can make a real difference in recovery.
