Waverly, VA (July 2, 2026) – One VDOT worker died, and another was seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon, July 1, after a crash on Route 460 in Waverly.

Virginia State Police said the two-vehicle crash happened around 1:30 p.m. near the George Town Road intersection. According to investigators, a commercial vehicle hit a VDOT crash truck in the right lane of Route 460.

Two VDOT employees were brought to a nearby hospital after the collision. One of them later died from their injuries.

The second VDOT worker was reported to have serious injuries. Their name and updated medical status were not included in the initial report. The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Our condolences go to the worker’s family and loved ones, and we hope the injured worker receives the care needed.

Roadside Work Crashes Create Serious Safety Risks

Roadside work crashes can be especially dangerous because crews may be close to active traffic. Even with warning vehicles, signs, cones, or lane restrictions, workers still face risk from vehicles moving through or near the work zone.

Crash trucks are frequently used to help shield road crews from traffic. When a commercial vehicle hits one, the force may cause severe damage and serious injuries to people nearby or inside the truck.

Crashes in the right lane may also create sudden traffic problems for other drivers. Investigators usually review vehicle movement, lane position, traffic control devices, speed, visibility, and the setup of the work zone to understand what happened.
