Why Pedestrian Emergencies on Interstates Are Often Deadly
Pedestrian emergencies on interstate highways are especially dangerous because vehicles travel at high speeds with limited time to react. Drivers may not expect someone to be walking across lanes designed primarily for fast-moving traffic, particularly during overnight or early morning hours when visibility is reduced.
Lighting conditions can also affect how quickly a driver notices a person on the roadway. Curves, barriers, and traffic flow may further limit reaction time. Even when a driver attempts to stop or avoid contact, the speed of interstate travel can make severe outcomes more likely.
After a fatal pedestrian roadway crash, investigators often examine traffic patterns, visibility, driver statements, and roadway design. Medical examiners may also review evidence to help determine the sequence of events leading up to the deadly impact.
