What Typically Happens When a Vehicle Catches Fire After a Crash in California?
Vehicle fires after a collision are relatively rare, but they can happen when fuel lines, batteries, or other flammable components are ruptured or exposed to heat from the impact. In multi-vehicle crashes, the risk increases because multiple points of contact can cause more widespread damage to a car’s undercarriage and engine compartment. Fire spreading from one vehicle to another is also a concern at busy intersections, where cars end up in proximity after an impact.
In California, fire units typically respond alongside traffic units to any crash reported as involving a fire or potential fire. Their primary focus is on containing the flames and preventing them from spreading while also helping any occupants who may still be inside. When a fire is involved, the scene becomes more complex to process, which can extend road closures and the time needed to gather evidence.
