Waimanalo, HI (May 5, 2026) – A head-on crash in the Waimanalo area on Monday, May 4, left two people seriously hurt and led to a temporary road closure.

Emergency units were called to the scene at Kalanianaole Hwy and Kaulu St. during the afternoon after reports of a collision involving two vehicles. When crews arrived, they found a man, believed to be about 35 years old, and a woman, believed to be 19, both suffering from serious injuries.

Both individuals were taken to nearby hospitals in serious condition for further treatment. As crews worked at the scene, Kalanianaole Hwy was shut down in both directions between Kaulu St. and Hinalea St., and traffic was rerouted through Oluolu St.

No additional details about the cause of the crash or the number of vehicles involved have been released.

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the crash, and more details will be released as soon as they become available. Our thoughts are with those injured as they receive medical care.

What Happens When a Road Is Closed After a Serious Crash?

When a major crash occurs, road closures are often put in place to keep drivers safe and allow emergency crews to work. These closures can last from a few minutes to several hours, depending on how difficult the situation is and how much cleanup is required.

During this time, detours are usually set up to guide traffic around the affected area. Drivers may notice increased congestion on nearby streets as vehicles are redirected. This can also impact response times for those traveling through the area.

In addition to clearing damaged vehicles, crews may also need to remove debris or address any hazards on the roadway. Once the scene is cleared and it is safe to reopen, traffic is allowed to resume its normal flow.
