Waldorf, MD (April 6, 2026) – A 64-year-old man from White Plains was killed on Friday night, April 3, after his motorcycle was struck by a car that ran a red light at the intersection of Maryland Route 228 (Berry Road) and Bunker Hill Road in Waldorf. Troopers and deputies responded around 7:49 p.m. following the collision.
Police identified the victim as Scott Beland, who was riding a 2018 Harley-Davidson while making a left turn onto Bunker Hill Road on a green left-turn signal. Investigators say a 2008 Infiniti G35, traveling eastbound on Route 228, failed to stop at a red light and struck Beland’s motorcycle. The Infiniti then lost control, hit a median guardrail, and fled the scene. Witnesses reported multiple occupants ran from the vehicle.
Beland was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities continue to investigate and are seeking information about the vehicle and its occupants.
Our condolences go out to the family of Scott Beland.
Why Red Light Violations Can Be Deadly for Motorcyclists
Intersections are high-risk locations for collisions, especially when drivers run red lights. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable because they lack the protective structure of a car, and even moderate-speed impacts can be fatal.
Left-turn crashes often involve misjudgment of speed or signal timing. Vehicles entering intersections illegally can leave riders with little time to react. Safety measures like helmets, protective gear, and defensive riding help reduce risk, but obeying traffic signals remains crucial to preventing severe crashes.
