Frequently Asked Questions
What can drivers do to avoid hitting someone on foot, especially at night or during events like trick-or-treating?
Slowing down in residential areas, scanning both sides of the road, and giving extra attention near crosswalks and parked cars can help drivers spot pedestrians sooner, particularly during low-light hours when kids may be out walking.
What injuries are common when a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle?
Pedestrians struck by vehicles frequently suffer broken bones, head and brain injuries, internal injuries such as organ bruising, and spinal damage, depending on the vehicle's speed and point of impact.
What usually causes pedestrian crashes?
Common factors include driver inattention, failure to yield, poor visibility at night, and speeding. Investigators typically review the vehicle's path, lighting conditions, and witness accounts to determine what happened.
Does a vehicle's speed affect how badly a pedestrian is hurt?
Yes. Lower speeds generally give drivers more time to stop and reduce the force of any impact, which can mean the difference between minor injuries and life-threatening ones.
