WASCO, Kern County, Calif., Oct. 26, 2026 — Two people were hurt in a head-on crash early Saturday morning, October 24, on State Route 46 near Kurt Road outside Wasco, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported shortly before 2 a.m. and involved a white Chrysler and a gray Nissan traveling in opposite directions. Both lanes of SR-46 were blocked by the vehicles and debris in the aftermath.
One occupant was reportedly trapped inside a vehicle and had to be freed before being moved, dispatch records show. A medical helicopter was called to the scene, but fog over Wasco kept it from landing, so both patients were instead taken by ground ambulance.
Investigators closed the highway between Kurt Road and McCoy Avenue while crews cleared the roadway and arranged a tow.
The cause of the head-on collision remains under investigation. We wish the injured a complete recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if an oncoming car drifts into my lane?
Slow down and move right if possible, aiming for the shoulder instead of swerving sharply left into another lane of traffic. Sudden hard turns can cause a rollover or send you into a different hazard, so controlled braking is usually safer than an abrupt maneuver.
What injuries are common in head-on crashes?
Because the combined speed of both vehicles is absorbed at once, head-on crashes often cause chest and abdominal injuries, broken bones, head trauma, and spinal injuries. Occupants can also become trapped if the front of the vehicle collapses inward.
What usually causes head-on collisions?
Common factors include a driver drifting across the center line due to distraction, fatigue, or impairment, as well as improper passing, wrong-way driving, or lost control on a curve. Investigators determine the specific cause case by case.
What to Do After a Head-On Crash in Wasco, CA
If you're involved in a head-on collision, call 911 right away and stay as still as possible until help arrives, especially if you feel pinned or can't move freely. Even if injuries seem minor, get checked by a medical provider, since internal injuries and whiplash don't always show symptoms immediately. Take photos of the scene if you're able, gather contact information from any witnesses, and request a copy of the official crash report once it's available. Keep records of any medical visits or vehicle damage in case they're needed later.
