WICHITA FALLS, Wichita County, Texas, Oct. 29, 2026 — One person was injured on Wednesday morning, October 28, after a chain of wrecks and a gas line fire shut down part of Old Jacksboro Highway, according to the Wichita Falls Police Department.
Officers were sent to the highway near a United Supermarket location around 7:45 a.m. for a downed power line and a two-vehicle crash. A semi-truck traveling southbound had snagged low-hanging power lines and dragged them down. Those lines were left low after a separate wreck on the previous night.
When the power lines came down, they reportedly struck a gas main and fused to it, triggering a large fire. The fire led to a second crash, as two vehicles swerved to avoid the scene and collided.
One person suffered minor injuries, including possible whiplash, in that second collision, according to a crew on scene. The semi-truck involved in the initial incident was gone by the time officers arrived and may have left before it could be identified, police said.
The Wichita Falls Police Department asked residents to avoid the area while crews worked. The Texas Department of Transportation said all lanes between Norman Street and Hatton Road were closed for several hours. The investigation remains active, and no further details have been released.
Our thoughts are with those who were injured, and we wish them a full recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What usually causes crashes like this one?
Chain-reaction wrecks often start with a hazard in the roadway, such as debris, a downed line, or a disabled vehicle, that forces other drivers to react suddenly. Following too closely or misjudging the available space can cause that reaction to become a secondary collision.
Does speed make a difference in multi-vehicle crashes?
Yes. Higher speeds give drivers less time to stop or steer around an obstacle and increase the force involved if vehicles collide, which raises the risk of injury.
Why is distracted driving especially risky in situations like this?
A driver who is not fully focused on the road may not notice a hazard or slowing traffic in time to react safely, turning an avoidable situation into a crash.
Can road hazards like downed lines affect how a crash unfolds?
Yes. An unexpected hazard, such as a power line or debris in a travel lane, can cause multiple drivers to brake suddenly or swerve at once, increasing the risk of a secondary collision.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Wichita Falls, TX
If you're involved in a crash, move to a safe spot if possible and check yourself and others for injuries before doing anything else. Call 911 so police and medical crews can respond, especially if there's any fire, downed utility lines, or gas hazard nearby, and keep a safe distance from any of those until crews clear them. Even if injuries seem minor at first, it's worth getting them checked by a medical provider, since some injuries, like whiplash, don't show symptoms right away. Take photos of the scene if it's safe to do so, get the names and contact information of other drivers and any witnesses, and request a copy of the official police report once it's available. Giving yourself time to rest and follow up with a doctor afterward can make a real difference in recovery.
