Failure to Yield Crashes Involving Motorcycles at Kansas Intersections
Failure to yield is one of the most common causes of fatal motorcycle crashes at intersections across Kansas. When a driver does not stop for a motorcycle crossing or approaching an intersection, the motorcyclist has almost no time to avoid the collision. The size difference between a motorcycle and an SUV means the rider typically absorbs the greatest force in the impact.
Three-wheeled motorcycles like the Harley-Davidson Tri Glide are increasingly popular, but they are still far more vulnerable in a collision than enclosed vehicles. At a busy intersection where cross traffic moves at highway speeds, even a brief lapse in attention can be fatal. Kansas traffic law requires drivers to yield the right of way at intersections, and failing to do so is a leading factor in intersection-related fatalities across the state.
