Why Bicycle Crashes Are Common on Multi-Lane Commercial Roads
Commercial corridors like Market Street often carry heavy traffic throughout the day. Multiple lanes, frequent entrances to shopping centers, and turning vehicles can create complex traffic patterns. Drivers may focus on other cars and overlook cyclists entering or crossing the roadway.
Bicyclists leaving parking lots or side streets must judge traffic speed and gaps carefully. On multi-lane roads, one vehicle may stop while another continues moving, increasing the risk of a collision. Higher speed limits on major routes also reduce reaction time for both drivers and cyclists.
Improved visibility, marked crossings, and increased driver awareness can help reduce serious bicycle crashes on busy commercial streets.
