Why Are Overnight Highway Crashes More Severe?
Traffic moves faster overnight when roads are less congested, so crashes that do occur tend to happen at higher speeds than during busier daytime hours. This added speed increases the force involved and can make injuries more severe even in a routine two-vehicle crash.
Fatigue also plays a larger role during overnight hours, affecting drivers’ reaction time as they may be nearing the end of a long shift or driving at their body’s natural low point for alertness. A momentary lapse in attention carries more weight at higher speeds.
Investigators typically examine speed, lighting, and each driver’s actions leading up to a crash like this one to understand how it unfolded. This kind of review helps establish the full circumstances, even when few witnesses were around at the time.
