What Should Bicyclists Know About Head Injury Prevention?
Head injuries are among the most serious risks associated with bicycle crashes. Wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet can help reduce the likelihood of severe head trauma during a fall or collision. Helmets should sit level on the head and have the straps adjusted securely beneath the chin.
Bicyclists should remain alert to changing road conditions, vehicles, pedestrians, and other potential hazards. Riding at a controlled speed can provide more time to react when an unexpected obstacle appears. Avoiding distractions and using designated bicycle facilities when available can also improve safety.
Visibility is especially important when riding near traffic or during low-light conditions. Reflective clothing and appropriate lights can make bicyclists easier for motorists to see. Following traffic signals and remaining predictable can further reduce the risk of crashes.
