What Should Drivers Know About Pedestrian Crashes?
Pedestrian crashes can result in serious injuries because people on foot have little physical protection when struck by a vehicle. Drivers should remain alert in areas where pedestrians may be crossing or walking near traffic. Reducing speed and maintaining a clear view of the roadway can give drivers more time to react.
Drivers should pay close attention at intersections, crosswalks, parking areas, and other locations with regular pedestrian activity. Visibility can be reduced at night or during poor weather, making it especially important to watch carefully for people entering the roadway. Drivers should also avoid distractions that can take their attention away from traffic.
Pedestrians can improve their visibility by using designated crossings when available and remaining aware of approaching vehicles. Reflective or light-colored clothing can also make pedestrians easier to see in low-light conditions. Both drivers and pedestrians sharing the road responsibly can help reduce the likelihood of serious crashes.
