What Should Drivers Know About Chain-Reaction Crashes?
Chain-reaction crashes can occur when several vehicles are traveling close together, and traffic suddenly slows or stops. Drivers who maintain a safe following distance have more time to recognize changes ahead and brake gradually. Looking beyond the vehicle immediately in front can also help motorists anticipate slowing traffic.
Heavy traffic can make it especially important to remain alert and avoid distractions. Drivers should adjust their speed to traffic conditions and leave enough space to stop without striking the vehicle ahead. Sudden lane changes or attempts to pass through slowing traffic can create additional hazards.
Seat belts provide important protection during crashes, particularly when a collision causes vehicles to be pushed into other vehicles or objects. Drivers and passengers should remain properly restrained throughout a trip. Children should also be secured in restraints appropriate for their age, size, and weight.
