What Are Common Causes of Two-Vehicle Highway Crashes?
Two-vehicle highway accidents can occur when drivers lose control, cross into opposing traffic, misjudge distances, or fail to adjust for road conditions.
Wet pavement can reduce tire traction and increase stopping distances, making sudden changes in speed or direction more difficult. Driver impairment, distraction, fatigue, and excessive speed can also increase the likelihood of a serious roadway collision. Seat belts are especially important because they help keep occupants properly positioned during a sudden change in motion.
Drivers should reduce speed on wet pavement, maintain a safe following distance, and stay alert to traffic in both directions. Proper vehicle maintenance, including functioning tires and brakes, can also reduce certain roadway hazards. Following posted speed limits and avoiding alcohol or other impairing substances can further lower the risk of a serious highway accident.
