Iona, ID (June 24, 2026) – A woman died, and another driver was injured after a four-vehicle collision near Iona on Monday afternoon.

According to the Idaho State Police, the collision occurred around 4:50 p.m. at the intersection of E 49th N and US 26. Investigators said a 39-year-old man from Camarillo, California, was driving an eastbound 2019 Nissan NV200 van on E 49th N when he failed to stop at a stop sign.

Police said the van struck a 2017 Dodge Challenger driven by a 59-year-old Idaho Falls woman. The force of the collision pushed the Dodge into the westbound lanes of US 26, where it struck a 2008 Ford Focus and a 2017 Ford F-250.

The Dodge driver was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the Ford F-250 was also taken for medical treatment. Two juveniles were inside the pickup, though their injury status was not released.

Investigators said the occupants of the Nissan, Dodge, and Ford Focus were wearing seat belts. The pickup driver was also restrained, but the status of the two juvenile passengers was not confirmed.

The roadway remained closed for about five hours while investigators examined the fatal wreck. The circumstances leading to the collision are still being reviewed. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the woman who died.

Why Failure to Stop at Intersections Can Lead to Serious Crashes

Intersections require drivers to make quick decisions while watching traffic from multiple directions. Failing to stop at a traffic sign can place vehicles in the path of cross traffic, increasing the chance of a severe collision.

The severity of an intersection crash often depends on factors such as vehicle speed, the angle of contact, and whether safety equipment is used. Side impacts and secondary collisions can create additional dangers when a vehicle is pushed into another lane of travel.

Investigators reviewing these crashes may examine traffic signs, vehicle positions, driver actions, and roadway conditions. They may also examine whether seat belts were used and how the vehicles moved after the initial contact. This information helps create a timeline of the collision and identify the factors involved.
