Manatee County, FL (July 14, 2026) – A 54-year-old North Port woman died on Saturday morning, July 12, after a crash on Interstate 275 near mile marker 5, just east of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The collision was reported at approximately 10 a.m.

The woman was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Tahoe westbound in the left lane when she accelerated into the right lane to pass a 2025 Chevrolet Suburban, then abruptly veered back into the left lane, cutting off the Suburban and striking its right front. The Suburban traveled onto the inside grass shoulder and hit a guardrail.

The Tahoe’s driver overcorrected to the right, causing the vehicle to rotate onto the outside grass shoulder, where it overturned multiple times and ejected her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Suburban’s driver, a 28-year-old Palmetto man, and his passengers, one adult and three children, were not hurt in the wreck. No further details about the identity of the woman killed were included in the initial report on the accident.

The crash remains under active investigation. We extend our sincere condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life.

What Happens When an Overcorrection Leads to a Rollover on a Highway?

Overcorrection is a well-documented factor in single-vehicle rollovers, particularly on highways where high speeds amplify the consequences of a sudden steering input. When a driver jerks the wheel to avoid a collision or return to their lane, the vehicle’s momentum can carry it sideways faster than the tires can regain grip. An SUV or truck with a higher center of gravity is especially vulnerable to tipping when lateral forces exceed the vehicle’s capacity.

Ejection from a rolling vehicle dramatically increases the risk of a fatal outcome. As a vehicle overturns repeatedly, an unrestrained or partially restrained occupant can be thrown clear of the car, leaving them exposed to the road surface and the vehicle itself as it continues to roll. The distance between the final resting position of an ejected person and the vehicle can vary widely depending on the speed and number of rotations involved.

Cut-off maneuvers at highway speeds create sudden braking or steering reactions from the affected driver, which can trigger a chain of events that neither driver is able to fully control. Even when the vehicle that was cut off avoids a direct collision, the evasive action required can send either vehicle into an uncontrolled path. These dynamics are carefully examined when investigators reconstruct the sequence of a crash involving multiple lane changes.
