Staten Island, NY (September 12, 2026) – A worker was killed after an apparent explosion on Thursday afternoon on a petroleum barge on Staten Island.

The explosion occurred shortly after 2:30 p.m. aboard the Casablanca at 3249 Richmond Terrace. The worker was found dead following the explosion, while all other workers were accounted for.

Emergency units responded to the damaged barge, where workers were scheduled to drain excess petroleum from the remaining container. No additional injuries were reported among the other workers. The circumstances surrounding the explosion remain under investigation.

Our condolences go to the worker’s family, friends, and colleagues.

What Safety Measures Can Reduce Risks on Petroleum Barges?

Petroleum barges require strict safety procedures because they carry flammable fuels that can produce hazardous vapors. Proper inspection of tanks, valves, piping, and transfer equipment can help identify problems before they create dangerous conditions.

Workers should follow established procedures for controlling ignition sources around petroleum products. Smoking, open flames, electrical equipment, and other potential ignition sources may create serious hazards when flammable vapors are present.

Ventilation and gas monitoring can also help identify unsafe vapor concentrations. Workers should use required protective equipment and follow procedures for entering enclosed spaces, transferring fuel, and handling damaged containers.

Emergency planning is especially important on vessels carrying petroleum. Clear evacuation procedures, communication systems, fire-control equipment, and regular safety training can help workers respond quickly when hazardous conditions develop.
