Morenci, AZ (July 8, 2026) – A worker was killed in a mine accident during surface copper mining operations at Freeport-McMoRan’s facility in Morenci on Monday, July 6.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m., according to a fatality notification from the Mine Safety and Health Administration. The agency classified the death as a powered haulage fatality. Freeport-McMoRan confirmed that an employee suffered fatal injuries in a haul truck accident.
The police have not publicly identified the worker who died or released details about the events leading up to the accident. Local officials responded to the scene, while federal safety investigators and representatives with the Arizona State Mine Inspector began reviewing the incident.
