Why Are Wrong-Way Crashes Usually So Dangerous?
Wrong-way crashes frequently result in severe injuries because the vehicles involved are usually traveling directly toward one another. The combined speed of both vehicles can create a tremendous force during a head-on collision.
These crashes often occur on highways and rural roads where vehicles travel at higher speeds. Investigators commonly review roadway markings, traffic signs, visibility conditions, and vehicle movements to determine how a driver entered the wrong lane. Fire can also increase the severity of a collision by creating additional dangers for vehicle occupants. Safety measures such as clear signage, roadway barriers, and driver awareness programs are designed to help reduce the risk of wrong-way travel and the serious consequences that can follow.
