Why Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Are Often Severe
Wrong-way highway crashes frequently result in devastating injuries because vehicles often strike each other head-on at high speeds. The combined force from both vehicles traveling in opposite directions can create catastrophic damage within seconds.
Limited reaction time is another major factor. Drivers traveling lawfully may have little opportunity to avoid an oncoming vehicle moving in the wrong direction in travel lanes, especially during nighttime hours.
Investigators reviewing wrong-way roadway collisions commonly examine entry points, traffic signs, lighting conditions, and driver behavior before the crash. Seat belt use is also an important factor because restraints can reduce the risk of fatal injuries during high-speed impacts.
