Grand Rapids, MI (May 23, 2026) – Officials said a 59-year-old man was injured on Friday after a wrong-way driving sequence led to a head-on collision on U.S. 131 in downtown Grand Rapids.

Police said the man was traveling in a silver Honda when he moved in the wrong direction on northbound U.S. 131 near Hall Street. Before the head-on impact, the vehicle sideswiped a pickup truck while continuing along the freeway.

The Honda then entered the oncoming lanes and struck a 24-year-old man driving in the opposite direction. Both drivers were taken to the hospital with lower extremity injuries. The freeway was closed for a period while emergency units arrived and assisted those involved. However, investigators continue reviewing how the wrong-way movement began on the freeway and what factors contributed to the sequence.

Our thoughts are with those injured.

Why Wrong-Way Freeway Driving Creates High Risk

Wrong-direction freeway driving is among the most dangerous roadway situations because vehicles may approach each other at high speed with little time to react. Even a short period of wrong-way travel can lead to multiple vehicle interactions before the driver is stopped.

Freeway design, entrance ramps, signage visibility, and lighting are often reviewed to understand how vehicles enter opposing lanes. Vehicle damage patterns, tire marks, and final stopping positions help reconstruct the sequence of movements. Driver behavior before entering the freeway may also be reviewed, along with possible impairment or confusion.

In many cases, authorities study whether warning systems or barriers could reduce entry into opposing lanes. Traffic flow data and nearby surveillance cameras can provide additional context. These reviews aim to clarify how the sequence developed and what factors contributed to the outcome.
