Dripping Springs, TX (May 31, 2026) – Two people were injured on Saturday morning, May 30, after a wrong-way crash involving a pickup truck and a truck tractor on US-290 near West US-290 and Mighty Tiger Trail.
According to Texas DPS, the collision happened after 1:39 a.m. when a Ford F-250 was traveling in the wrong direction on US-290. Investigators said the pickup then collided head-on with a truck tractor pulling a trailer.
Officials said the truck tractor driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the Ford F-250, a 27-year-old man, was also transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities reported an oil spill at the scene, which led to additional cleanup efforts. US-290 remained closed for several hours while crews cleared debris and worked to remove the spilled material. The roadway was fully reopened by around 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances that led to the wrong-way driving incident. We are thinking of both individuals injured in the crash as they receive medical care.
Why Wrong-Way Highway Crashes Often Lead to Hazardous Cleanup Operations
Wrong-way crashes on divided highways are especially dangerous because they often involve direct head-on impacts at high speeds. These collisions can cause significant vehicle damage and may also lead to fluid leaks such as oil, fuel, or other materials that require specialized cleanup.
When hazardous spills occur, road closures are often extended while crews work to ensure the pavement is safe for reopening. Investigators typically examine roadway signage, lighting, driver condition, and entry points onto the highway to understand how a vehicle ended up traveling in the wrong direction. Even when injuries are not fatal, the combination of high-speed impact and roadway contamination can create complex recovery and traffic disruption situations.
