What Factors Are Often Examined Following a Motorcycle Crash?
When a serious motorcycle crash occurs, investigators typically review several factors to better understand how the sequence of events unfolded. These reviews may include vehicle positions, travel direction, roadway markings, and physical evidence left on the pavement.
Weather and road surface conditions are also commonly documented because they can affect traction and rider control. Even when roads are dry and visibility is good, investigators may still examine speed, rider actions, and any maneuvers made immediately before the motorcycles came to rest.
Motorcycle crashes can present unique challenges because riders have less physical protection than occupants of passenger vehicles. As a result, even a loss of control that might cause limited damage in another type of vehicle can lead to severe harm. Information gathered from the roadway, vehicle inspections, and witness statements can help provide a clearer picture of what occurred and may contribute to a more complete understanding of the circumstances involved.
