Dimmick Township, IL (July 5, 2026) – A rollover crash on Route 251 north of North 35th Rd killed one person and left two others seriously hurt on Friday afternoon. Emergency units were dispatched at approximately 2:22 p.m. on July 3 to a stretch of road about two miles north of Dimmick School.

One occupant, described as a young woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other occupants were airlifted to a regional hospital with serious injuries. Their conditions had not been released at the time of this report.

Both lanes of Route 251 were shut down following the wreck and reopened at approximately 5:25 p.m. The name of the person who died has been withheld pending notification of next of kin. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and no further details have been made public as of this report.

Our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the young woman who lost her life, and we hope the two survivors pull through.

What Factors Contribute to Rollover Crashes on Rural Two-Lane Roads?

Rollover crashes on rural two-lane roads can occur for a variety of reasons, and the consequences are severe due to the speeds involved and the distance from trauma care. Vehicles with a higher center of gravity, such as SUVs and vans, are more prone to rolling during sudden steering maneuvers or after leaving the roadway. When a vehicle dips onto a soft shoulder or uneven surface, the change in traction can trigger a roll that happens faster than occupants can react.

Rural roads like Route 251 lack the safety infrastructure found on highways, including median barriers, rumble strips, and guardrails that might redirect or slow a vehicle before a rollover begins. Longer stretches between intersections can also lead drivers to travel at higher speeds, which increases the energy involved in any crash. The combination of speed, road design, and vehicle type can turn a single loss-of-control event into a fatal outcome.

Airlift transport is frequently used in serious rural crashes because regional trauma centers capable of treating multiple critical patients may be far from the scene. The two survivors in this crash were both flown to a hospital, which reflects the severity of their injuries and the distance from advanced medical care. Rapid transport in these situations can be a determining factor in whether seriously hurt occupants survive.
