Madison, AL (June 16, 2026) – One person died and four others were hurt following a collision involving a patrol vehicle on Highway 53 in Madison County early Saturday, according to state troopers.

The roadway mishap happened at about 12:15 a.m. between Blake Bottom Rd and Dan Tibbs Rd. Investigators said a Ford Explorer operated by a Madison County deputy was heading to a call with emergency lights and a siren activated when it struck a Kia Optima carrying three occupants.

Jacques L. Whitt, 27, of Madison, was riding in the Kia and was killed. Troopers said neither Whitt nor the driver was wearing a seat belt, and both were ejected from the vehicle. The driver was taken to Huntsville Hospital, while another passenger in the Kia also received medical treatment.

The deputy and an intern riding in the patrol vehicle were likewise hurt and taken to Huntsville Hospital. Additional details about the collision had not been made public as of this report.

State troopers continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the roadway collision.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends mourning the loss of Jacques L. Whitt.

What Factors Are Commonly Examined After a Crash Involving an Emergency Vehicle?

When a roadway collision involves an emergency vehicle, investigators typically review several factors to determine how the sequence of events unfolded. These reviews mostly include vehicle speeds, traffic patterns, visibility, weather conditions, and the actions of everyone involved before contact occurred.

Emergency vehicle equipment may also be examined to verify whether warning devices such as lights and sirens were activated. Witness statements, roadway markings, surveillance footage, and vehicle data can provide additional insight into what happened. Seat belt use is another factor frequently documented because it can influence the severity of injuries.

In many cases, investigators combine physical evidence with electronic data and witness accounts to develop a clearer understanding of the circumstances. This process helps establish an accurate timeline and identify contributing factors related to the collision.
