Watsonville, CA (June 16, 2026) – Two people lost their lives and two others suffered major injuries following a two-vehicle collision Sunday night at the intersection of East Lake Avenue and Casserly Road.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on June 15 and involved a white Infiniti sedan and a gray Toyota Camry. Investigators reported that a 19-year-old Watsonville man was driving the Infiniti westbound on East Lake Avenue east of Casserly Road, accompanied by a passenger in his 20s. At the same time, a 19-year-old Capitola man was driving the Toyota eastbound with a 17-year-old female passenger.
Authorities said the Toyota came to rest beneath a large billboard sign on the dirt shoulder following the collision. Both occupants of the Toyota suffered fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The two occupants of the Infiniti sustained major injuries. One was airlifted by CALSTAR to a trauma center, while the other was transported by ambulance to an out-of-county hospital for treatment.
Emergency crews spent nearly an hour extricating the injured victims from the heavily damaged Infiniti. Firefighters reportedly removed the roofs from both vehicles to reach those trapped inside. The intersection was littered with debris, including vehicle parts, shattered glass, and engine components.
Investigators stated that alcohol and/or drugs are being examined as possible contributing factors. The driver of the Infiniti was arrested following the crash and remains in custody while the investigation continues.
East Lake Avenue (Highway 152) was closed in both directions for several hours as emergency personnel and investigators processed the scene.
The investigation remains ongoing. Our deepest condolences go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of the two victims who lost their lives. We also hope those injured in the collision make a full recovery.
Why Serious Intersection Crashes Require Longer Investigations?
Major intersection collisions frequently involve detailed crash reconstruction efforts because investigators must determine vehicle speeds, directions of travel, right-of-way issues, and other factors that may have contributed to the impact. Evidence such as vehicle damage, debris patterns, roadway markings, and witness statements can help establish the sequence of events.
When fatalities occur and impairment is suspected, investigators conduct additional testing and evidence collection to determine whether alcohol, drugs, or other factors played a role in the crash. These investigations may continue for weeks as authorities review all available information.
Crashes involving vehicle entrapment also require significant emergency response resources. Firefighters use specialized rescue equipment to remove occupants safely from heavily damaged vehicles, particularly when severe injuries are involved.
