Why Pedestrian Safety Depends on Visibility and Driver Awareness

Pedestrian crashes usually occur during nighttime hours, when reduced visibility can make it harder for drivers and people on foot to see one another. Factors such as street lighting, weather, roadway design, clothing visibility, and traffic speed may all influence how easily pedestrians are noticed by approaching vehicles.

Investigators typically examine evidence such as vehicle positioning, roadway markings, lighting conditions, surveillance footage, and witness statements to better understand how a pedestrian crash unfolded. They may also review whether crosswalks or traffic control devices were present and assess sight distances along the roadway. Gathering this information helps create a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the fatality and supports a thorough review of the available evidence.
