Alamo Township, MI (June 8, 2026) – One person died following a three-vehicle crash on southbound US-131 near the US-131 Business Loop in Alamo Township.

The fatal collision happened at about 9:43 a.m. on Friday, July 24, when a roll-off truck towing a flatbed trailer, a Chevrolet Express utility van, and a semi-tractor were involved. According to preliminary findings, the roll-off truck was traveling in the left lane when the van struck it from behind. The van then crossed into the right lane and hit the semi-tractor.

The 55-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Express utility van, who was from the Big Rapids area, died at the scene. The drivers of the roll-off truck and the semi-tractor were not hurt.

Southbound US-131 at D Avenue remained closed for about five hours while emergency units worked, evidence was documented, and the roadway was cleared. Investigators continue working to determine all the circumstances surrounding the crash.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the man’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.

What Factors Are Commonly Reviewed Following a Multi-Vehicle Highway Crash?

After a multi-vehicle highway crash, investigators typically examine several pieces of evidence to determine how the sequence unfolded. They usually review vehicle positions, roadway markings, damage patterns, traffic flow, and any available surveillance or dashboard camera footage. Witness statements may also help establish the order of events and whether any sudden lane changes or braking occurred before the vehicles came together.

Mechanical inspections can reveal whether equipment problems contributed, while weather, visibility, and road surface conditions are also evaluated. Seat belt use and other occupant safety measures are documented because they may provide additional context about injuries or fatalities. As more evidence becomes available, investigators can develop a clearer picture of what occurred and use those findings to complete the final report.
