Why Crash Trends at Intersections Matter
Busy intersections are usually monitored over time to identify changes in traffic safety. When the number of collisions increases, transportation agencies may review traffic patterns, roadway design, signal timing, speed limits, and visibility. Population growth, higher traffic volumes, and nearby development can all contribute to changing driving conditions.
Safety reviews may also include examining turning movements, driver behavior, weather, lighting, and previous reports from the same roadway. These findings can help determine whether engineering improvements or traffic control changes could reduce future risks. Because roadways have different characteristics, long-term data is often used to better understand why certain intersections experience a higher number of serious traffic incidents over time.
