Why Are Motorcycle Crashes Usually More Serious Than Other Traffic Accidents?
Motorcycle riders have much less physical protection than people traveling in passenger vehicles, making even lower-speed crashes more likely to result in serious harm. Protective gear such as helmets, jackets, gloves, and riding boots can reduce the risk of severe injury, but they cannot eliminate it.
Many motorcycle crashes occur at intersections or when another driver fails to notice an approaching bike. Road conditions, visibility, weather, and vehicle speed may also influence how a crash unfolds. After a serious motorcycle collision, investigators mostly review roadway evidence, vehicle damage, witness statements, and other available information to better understand what occurred. As additional facts become available, a clearer picture of the circumstances can emerge.
