How Can Drivers Protect Young Pedestrians Near Schools?
School areas can have unpredictable pedestrian activity, particularly when students are arriving or leaving. Children may cross streets in groups, enter a roadway unexpectedly, or be less aware of approaching traffic than adult pedestrians. Drivers should reduce their speed in school zones and remain prepared to stop when students are near a crosswalk or roadway.
Crosswalks and intersections require careful attention because pedestrians may be crossing from either direction. Drivers should scan both sides of the street before proceeding and avoid distractions that could take their eyes away from the road. Extra caution is also important when vehicles, buses, or other objects temporarily block a driver’s view of the sidewalk or crossing area.
Young pedestrians can benefit from using designated crossings and paying attention to traffic signals and approaching vehicles. However, drivers remain responsible for maintaining awareness of people who may be walking near the roadway. Slowing down and allowing additional space around schools can give motorists more time to react to unexpected movements.
