Why Crashes Involving Large Trucks Can Lead to Traffic Delays
Collisions involving 18-wheelers often cause major traffic disruptions because of the size and weight of the vehicles involved. Even when hazardous materials are not present, large trucks may block travel lanes or require specialized equipment for removal.
Investigators commonly examine vehicle speed, braking distance, roadway grade, and visibility conditions after crashes involving commercial trucks. Mountain roads and steep inclines can also affect stopping ability and driver reaction time.
Cleanup operations may take longer when large vehicles are involved because crews must safely remove debris and inspect the roadway for damage. Traffic backups can continue even after lanes reopen as congestion gradually clears from the surrounding area.
