Dallas, TX (July 23, 2026) — A driver was killed in a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a parked 18-wheeler on westbound I-20 in Dallas on July 22.

The crash occurred on Wednesday afternoon near Westmoreland Road and beneath the US-67 interchange, according to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies reported the fatality while crews worked at the scene.

The two right lanes and the shoulder of westbound I-20 were blocked during the response. Authorities also closed the westbound entrance ramp from US-67.

The incident remained under investigation. We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of the person who died.

Where the Collision Happened: Westbound I-20 Near Westmoreland Rd

I-20 is a major east-west interstate through southern Dallas, carrying passenger vehicles and commercial traffic across the region. The area near Westmoreland Road and the US-67 interchange includes entrance and exit movements that can cause vehicles to enter neighboring lanes.

A stopped or parked vehicle along an interstate can create a serious hazard when it is close to active traffic. Lane and shoulder closures in an interchange area may also affect both through traffic and vehicles entering from connecting ramps.

What We Know

  • The crash occurred on Wednesday afternoon on the westbound I-20.
  • The location was near Westmoreland Road and beneath US-67.
  • A passenger vehicle and a parked 18-wheeler were involved.
  • One driver died.
  • Two right lanes, the shoulder, and the westbound US-67 entrance ramp were blocked.
  • The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.

Why Rear Impacts With Parked Trucks Can Be Severe

A parked 18-wheeler presents a large, rigid obstacle that may be difficult for an approaching driver to avoid when reaction time is limited. The difference in vehicle size can also cause the smaller vehicle to absorb much of the crash force.

On an interstate such as I-20, traffic speeds can increase the severity of a rear impact. Investigators will need to establish the truck’s exact position and the other vehicle’s movements before determining the full sequence.

How This Crash Is Investigated

Investigators may document damage to both vehicles, tire marks, debris, lane positions, and the location of the 18-wheeler relative to the shoulder and travel lanes. Those details can help estimate the direction and force of impact.

Officials may also review witness accounts and available roadway or vehicle data. The early report confirms the rear-impact circumstance but does not explain why the collision occurred or assign responsibility.

What to Do After a Collision

Families affected by a fatal Texas crash should preserve records connected to the incident, including medical documents, vehicle information, photographs, insurance correspondence, and communications from investigating agencies. The official crash report may provide a more complete record than the preliminary information released from the scene.

Texas crash reports are maintained by the Texas Department of Transportation through the Crash Records Information System. Reports can be purchased through the CRIS Public Portal at cris.dot.state.tx.us/public/Purchase. The police report is identified as CR-3, while CR-91 is used for requests submitted by mail.

A regular report costs $6, and a certified report costs $8. Online payments through CRIS may be made by credit or debit card. Officers have 10 days to file the report, followed by approximately four business days of TxDOT processing. Reports are often available within seven to 10 business days.

Parties with a proper interest may obtain an unredacted report. Other requesters receive a redacted copy under Texas Transportation Code § 550.065(c). Texas does not have a fixed public-release window because access and redaction depend on the requester’s eligibility.
