Queens, NY (July 1, 2026) – Two people lost their lives after a coach bus overturned on the Long Island Expressway in Queens late on Monday night, June 29. The chain-reaction collision happened at about 11:40 p.m. when the westbound bus struck two vehicles before hitting the center median and overturning into the eastbound lanes, where it hit two additional vehicles.
The bus driver and one passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Three other people were left in critical condition, while two others were seriously hurt, and 15 more received minor injuries. Most of those hurt were passengers aboard the bus.
The overturned coach led to extensive traffic delays as portions of the Long Island Expressway near Exit 16 remained closed through the Tuesday morning commute. Both directions approaching the Midtown Tunnel were also shut down before all lanes reopened around 9:30 a.m.
Investigators are continuing to examine what led to the bus overturning.
