Queens, NY (July 1, 2026) – A 13-year-old passenger lost his life, and another teenager was hurt in a moped collision on Monday afternoon on 162nd St in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens.

The fatal crash happened at about 12:30 p.m. Police said the teen operating the moped attempted to swerve after a parked black SUV’s driver’s side door was opened into the roadway. The rider lost control, causing the passenger to fall from the moped and collide with a truck traveling southbound on 162nd St.

The passenger was pronounced dead after suffering fatal injuries. The 13-year-old who was driving the moped was taken to a hospital for treatment. Surveillance video captured the SUV parking moments before the teens struck the open door.

The collision occurred in front of several neighborhood businesses, leaving nearby workers and residents shaken. No arrests have been made, and the identity of the teen who died has not been released.

Police are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the wreck. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the teen who lost his life.

Why Opening a Vehicle Door Can Create a Serious Hazard for Riders

Opening a vehicle door into moving traffic can create an unexpected obstacle for people traveling on the road, especially those riding bicycles, mopeds, or motorcycles. Because these vehicles are smaller and less stable than passenger cars, riders often have little time or space to avoid a suddenly opened door.

If a rider swerves to avoid the obstruction, they may lose control or enter another lane where other vehicles are traveling. Safety experts encourage drivers and passengers to check mirrors and look over their shoulders before opening a door. This practice, sometimes called the “Dutch Reach,” uses the hand farthest from the door, making it more likely the person will turn and notice approaching traffic before exiting the vehicle.

2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
