Palm City, FL (July 1, 2026) – Two people lost their lives in a deadly traffic incident on Florida’s Turnpike in Palm City on Monday afternoon, June 29. The roadway was shut down in the northbound lanes shortly after 3 p.m. near mile marker 132, just before Exit 133.

One other person was hurt and taken to a hospital by ground ambulance for treatment of traumatic injuries. Emergency units remained at the roadway while crews worked to clear the vehicles, causing heavy traffic backups that stretched to about mile marker 129 before all lanes eventually reopened.

The cause of the crash has not yet been released.

Investigators continue working to determine what led to the crash.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends mourning this tragic loss.

Why Traffic Delays Can Last for Hours After a Fatal Highway Crash

Fatal highway crashes usually require extended road closures while crews safely remove damaged vehicles and document evidence. During this process, investigators may examine tire marks, vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and other physical evidence to better understand what happened.

When a major highway is closed, traffic can quickly back up for several miles as vehicles are diverted or forced to wait for lanes to reopen. Drivers approaching the closure are encouraged to slow down, stay alert for changing traffic patterns, and follow posted detours when available. Delays can continue even after the roadway reopens because congestion takes time to clear. Planning alternate routes and checking traffic updates before traveling can help reduce travel disruptions during major highway emergencies.
